St. James Choral Scholars

The St. James Choral Scholars program, which was initiated in 2002, is part of the outreach and mission of St. James Episcopal Church. St. James has always been passionate about celebrating our Episcopal/Anglican musical heritage; through the practice of excellence in worship and music and the training of gifted musicians to carry this heritage forward, we maintain an active role in the stewardship of the future of music in the Church. Through a process of application, interview and audition, St. James’ Director of Music selects up to four Furman University music students each year to be St. James Choral Scholars. These students are given the opportunity to participate in and understand the rhythm of traditional liturgical worship, train as leaders in ensemble singing, learn traditional hymnody and choral works, and experience the unique character of different liturgical seasons as well as the sacred repertoire that complements them. Our Choral Scholars work closely with our Director of Music, who plays a vital role in guiding their formation as musicians familiar with and appreciative of the Episcopal/Anglican tradition, preparing them to serve the Church and the world. The Choral scholars are paid a modest stipend to help support their education and assist in covering their expenses.
