FROM THE (INTERIM) RECTOR.

Lambeth began, and ended, and all without much news. Certainly nothing that caught the front page or even the evening news. The Anglican communion is still intact, or, at least, as intact as it has been any time lately. Some African bishops did not attend. Some Australian bishops did not attend. Several hundred bishops met in Jerusalem several weeks before Lambeth. But they declined to be a schism. They did suggest that the Canterbury's archbishop may no longer be the symbol of Anglican unity.

Archbishops of Canterbury, our oldest diocese, have usually alternated between the evangelical and catholic wings of the Church of England. In many places the evangelicals are much more prominent than here. Most American Episcopalians are orthodox theologically. To be catholic means to be sacramental. To be evangelical usually means to be Bible centered, Word centered, experience centered, even conversion centered.

The two view points are not necessarily contradictory. Many evangelicals are also sacramental. John Wesley was, for instance. And some of our most talented preachers have been catholic in their orientation.

My sense is that Anglicanism has always been a very large tent. It has managed, usually, to keep these elements even with their subdivisions in a comfortable tension. There have certainly been times and places where an evangelical parish and an anglo-catholic parish on opposite sides of a city have seemed to be two quite different religions. And yet, with some variations, they both used the same Prayer Book. The catholics might have added some 19th century ceremonial borrowed from Rome; the evangelicals might have "prayed in" the sermon with extempore prayer, but they were still more alike than different.

Because this is true, there have been few divisions in Anglicanism. The bishops could not find a way to keep the Methodists, of course, and in the middle of the 19th century we lost the Reformed Episcopalians over the issue of baptismal regeneration.

That seems like a small storm in a large lake, but in fact it goes to the heart of what the question has been since the beginning. Is the church a gathering of the saved, the redeemed, the elect, the chosen, those who have had an experience of salvation? Or, is the church the Body of Christ in the world and so itself the instrument of salvation. The quandary has no solution. It is a continuing paradox.

Perhaps Anglicanism is itself a paradox. It is intentionally and consciously both catholic and reformed. Thomas Cranmer himself wavered between two poles. The puritans complained that the Prayer Book was just the old mass in English, as in fact it was, and someone complained that the new "presbyter" was nothing but the old "priest writ large."

Black people, female people, gay people, as well as handicapped people and poor people, have all waited a long time to be acknowledged as God's own people. All Christian communities share the paradox-what must be kept and what must be left behind. Jesus commented in the gospel a few weeks ago about the householder who brings out from the store house both the new and the old. I suspect that this is what it is about, and if it is, then it will not be solved in two weeks in the summer, or even in the lifetime of weeks, but only in the long term as time tests both the old and the new, and what endures is what endures.

FROM THE RECTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE...
The Rector Search Committee has had a very busy summer.Building on the results of the Parish Survey, we developed a parish profile and position description for the Church Deployment Office, which is the national clearing house for positions in Episcopal Churches. Within hours of posting our job description, we received our first application. In the past two months, we have been screening potential candidates who came to our attention via parishioners, the diocese, and through the Church Deployment Office. Teams made up of members of the Search Committee will be visiting potential candidates on their home turf during August. Based on what we learn from these visits and interviews, we hope to develop a short list of candidates to present to the vestry. Ultimately the rector will be chosen by the vestry. If you have any questions, please contact me.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED: We are still looking for a few committed and energetic people to help out with Sunday School for children and youth in the fall. The children are divided into the following classes: 2 & 3 year olds, 4 & 5 year olds, grades 1 & 2, grades 3-5, middle school and high school. Classes will begin on September 7 and continue throughout the school year. We like to have at least two teachers per class. Please contact Fr. Jonathan (jonathan@stjamesgreenville.org) if you are interested in this vital ministry of St. James.

THROUGH THE VALLEY is the new Bereavement Support Group run by Lutheran Hospice and The Lutheran Church of Our Saviour. The first meeting of this 10-week group is targeted for Tuesday, September 9, although it really depends upon the schedules of the participants. Target audience is adults who have suffered an adult loss, including a spouse, a parent, or a grown son or daughter. The group will meet at The Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, 2600 Wade Hampton Blvd. Contact Cindy Abrams (848-1777) or Chris Strom (834-5448 or 982-3683) for information and sign up.

BLESSED NUMBERS - The St. James Charity Garden has now provided the Greenville Hispanic Mission with almost 500 pounds of vegetables: cucumbers, green beans, hot peppers, yellow squash and zucchini.  The tasks of picking, watering, and hoeing are now being shared by nine parishioners.  Thanks be to God who sends forth faithful workers into a plentiful harvest!

SCHOOL TOOLS - Thanks to all who contributed to our School Tools project! Your generous donations filled five hefty boxes. The team at United Way is now filling 5,000 back packs for Greenville County children who need the supplies as they begin their new school year.

BATTISTINI FUND - Many of you have expressed your concern about Mike Battistini's situation and have asked how you might help. He was released from the hospital and is back at home where friends and family are helping to take care of him. In the coming weeks St. James will be setting up a medical trust to which Mike's friends and parishioners of St. James can contribute. The money will help pay for his medical bills and his ongoing living expenses while he recuperates. If you would like to donate to this effort, write a check to St. James and put his name in the memo line.

SEMINARY SUPPORT - We at St. James have an opportunity to offer tangible support for one of our members as he takes the next step towards priesthood. This fall David Sibley plans to attend General Theological Seminary in New York City. Contributions from St. James (up to $5000) will be matched by a fellowship of the Fund for Theological Education. If you would like to make a donation to help with David's tuition and fees, please write a check to St. James with David's name in the memo line. Grace Church, Camden SC, where David grew up, will also be contributing to this effort.

OUR EYES WERE OPENED - Frustrated? Confused? Feeling inadequate? No?! Then come spend two hours with United Ministries' Our Eyes Were Opened (Tues., Aug. 26, 9:30-11:30 AM). Offered by the same people who provide so many other invaluable tools to our community for the care of people we might never see or meet, this poverty simulation is guaranteed to change the way you think about who is poor and why. Your participation will give you plenty to think about and your post-workshop input will help United Ministries fine-tune their program. Don't miss it. For more information, contact Rebecca Owens, 232-6463, Ext. 2205, rowens@united-ministries.org

COUPONS FOR MINISTRY - Parishioner Sherry Harrell is clipping coupons to aid the North Greenville Food Crisis Ministry. If you'd like to help, please bring your unneeded Sunday newspaper grocery coupon circulars to church with you, and leave in the designated basket in the hallway next to the children's church room.

KAIROS OUTSIDE #4 - This ministry is for women who have incarcerated loved ones. They serve time just as their loved one does. Many of them work two jobs, take care of additional family members and feel isolation and rejection from the community. The team will meet in the Parish Life Center on Saturday, August 23, from 9:00-3:00. There are several ways to serve if you cannot commit to being on team. Printed brochures and application forms can be found on the signup table. The event will take place September 25-27 at John Wesleyan Camp at Table Rock. For more information regarding this ministry, please contact Sandy Waddell (467-1938, sandywaddell@bellsouth.net)

DEADLINE FOR NOTICES & ENOTES - With the August 24 issue we will return to weekly notices. The deadline for submitting articles for the eNotes and printed announcement sheet is noon on Wednesday, August 20. Please send announcements by e-mail to admin@stjamesgreenville.org.
